EA to Release Version of "Madden NFL" on Facebook

New York - Video game publisher Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) plans to bring a version of its popular "Madden NFL" football game franchise to Facebook, Bloomberg reports. "We have to make 'Madden' more accessible," EA Sports president Peter Moore told Bloomberg. "You'll see us on Facebook going forward." Moore called the Facebook version of the game, which does not yet have a release date, a "simpler experience" than playing on a console.

Sony PSP App to Stream Live Football to Arsenal Fans

London - Sony (NYSE: SNE) Computer Entertainment has released a new application that will provide live streaming video of English Premier League football team Arsenal to PSP handheld game devices, The Register reported. The Arsenal TV Matchday application, set to become available for download in coming weeks, will let fans attending games at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium watch goal replays during matches. Video will be delivered over a secure Wi-Fi network within the stadium.

London - Professional soccer club Manchester United, a team within the English Premier League, has imposed a ban on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for its players, according to reports. The reports indicate that a Facebook account for Man U player Wes Brown was taken down, while the "Walls" of profiles for Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand were wiped clean. Twitter accounts purported to be operated by Man U players Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher are no longer online.

YouTube to Stream Indian Cricket Tourney Live

USA Today to Simulate National High School Football Tournament

McLean, Va. - While odds are that a national high school football champion most likely never will be crowned, Gannett's (NYSE: GCI) USA Today said that it is planning to use the computer technology behind college football's Bowl Championship Series to simulate a tournament that will determine a winner. Starting Jan. 4, the paper will partner with Gannett-owned HighSchoolSports.net, to kick off a virtual tournament bracket. Sixty-four teams will play in computer simulations programmed by Ken Massey, one of the mathematicians whose computer models were used to create the CS rankings for college football in 1999. The winner of the inaugural "Massey Virtual National Championship" will be announced Jan. 9 at the link below.

Sony, FIFA to Capture 2010 World Cup Matches in 3D

Cape Town, South Africa - Sony (NYSE: SNE) announced this week that it has partnered with FIFA, the international soccer federation, to produce up to 25 3D broadcasts of matches from the 2010 FIFA World Cup. While the 3D matches won't be available for home TV broadcasts, the company will be airing the footage at events in Berlin, London, Mexico City, Paris, Rio, Rome and Sydney. Beginning next year, Sony does plan to begin incorporating 3D compatibility into consumer products including its Bravia LCD TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, VAIO computers and the PlayStation 3.

Los Angeles - The National Basketball Association (NBA) has introduced a new two-screen interactive TV application, designed for fans watching live NBA games on TV who are interested in additional real-time content on their computers. The NBA TV Companion will offer real-time stats; breaking news; play-by-play analysis; and 3D shot charts. Other features include social networking integration; live chat with fans, personnel and on-air talent; and special halftime and postgame reports. The NBA said it will offer versions of the application for every team and every national broadcaster.
