Warner’s $33M Bid for Midway Games Close To Being Approved

Chicago – Warner Bros. (NYSE: TWX) $33 million bid to buy "substantially all" the assets of Midway Games (NYSE: MWY) looks like its close to being approved. A Delaware bankruptcy judge said Wednesday that the objections to the Warner Bros. deal were resolved, clearing the way for the company to change owners, according to Chicago Tribune.

Nickelodeon Launches AddictingGames For iPhones

Los Angeles - Viacom-owned kids channel Nickelodeon (NYSE: VIA) is launching a cross-promotion network for the iPhone, dubbed the AddictingGames iNetwork. AddictingGames will be publishing games from its own and other Viacom properties on the network as well as invite indie game developers to benefit from the brand name.

Former NCAA Players Sue EA Over Likenesses in Football Games

Report: U.S. Used Game Market Hits $2B, 100 Million Units

New York - The U.S. market for used video games has reached $2 billion in annual revenues, with 100 million units now changing hands each year, according to a report from Wedbush Morgan cited by GamesIndustry.biz. The figure represents one-third of all games sold every year. The firm said that just 5% of new game sales are affected by the used market, noting that most used games do not appear on the market until more than two months after their physical release dates.

China Bans Trading in Virtual Currency, 'Gold Farming'

Shanghai, China - The Chinese government has announced new limits on the use of virtual currency, in a move intended in part to curtail the practice of "gold farming," where people in poorer countries play online games and collect virtual gold which is then sold to rich players in other countries.

French Xbox Users Get Canal Plus TV, Movies, Soccer

London - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) has partnered with French pay-TV company Canal Plus to offer movies, TV and soccer on demand through its Xbox 360 video game console, Reuters reported. The deal will give French Xbox Live members access to some 3,000 programs, as well as French Ligue 1 soccer matches. Microsoft signed an Xbox Live programming carriage deal last month with BSkyB.

MTV Games Names Scott Guthrie Vice President, General Manager

New York - Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) MTV Networks on Monday named Scott Guthrie as vice president and general manager of MTV Games. Guthrie was formerly executive vice president of publishing at THQ. The company also said it named former Sony Computer Entertainment America executive David Cox as its senior vice president of sales.

Columbia Pictures Bringing "Uncharted" Video Game to Big Screen

The Tomb Raider-like game is being adapted for the screen by Kyle Ward ("Kane & Lynch," "Hitman 2"), and produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner.

EA Merges Bioware, Mythic Studios; Inks Dr. Pepper Promo Deal

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) is consolidating its Bioware and Mythic game development studios into a single unit that develops massively multiplayer titles, but both studios will keep their existing names. Mythic co-founder Mark Jacobs will leave the company; the new group will be headed by Bioware co-founder Ray Muzyka, while Mythic's other co-founder, Rob Denton, will be general manager at Mythic. EA on Thursday also announced a new multimillion-dollar marketing deal with soft drink maker Dr. Pepper. Under the agreement, special codes found on more than 500 million Dr. Pepper products will unlock exclusive content and levels on select EA titles, including The Sims 3.

San Francisco - Sega of America and Sega Europe on Thursday announced that Naoya Tsurumi, the longstanding leader of the company's video game business, will assume worldwide responsibility for Sega's consumer business, which includes its Japanese, American and European units. After four years, Sega of America president and COO Simon Jeffrey has resigned to pursue other interests. Meanwhile, Mike Hayes was promoted to the new position of president and COO of both Sega of America, and Sega Europe.

Schappert to Return to EA as COO; Pleasants to Head Playdom

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) on Thursday named John Schappert as its new COO, following news that John Pleasants will leave the company to become the new CEO of social game developer Playdom. Schappert joined EA in 1991 and went on to lead many of the company's biggest game franchises, before leaving in 2007 to become the corporate vice president of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business. Pleasants, also the former president and CEO of Revolution Heath and Ticketmaster, will replace Playdom co-founder Dan Yue, who will become chief product officer.

U.K. Picks PEGI Over BBFC for Video Game Ratings

London - The U.K. government has selected the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system to provide video game ratings for titles sold in the U.K., over the current ratings scheme provided by the BBFC, GamePolitics reported. The government's Digital Britain report released today included the decision to opt for PEGI, which had been lobbied for by the ELSPA, the U.K.'s video game publisher trade group.
