Google Book Settlement Gets Day in Court; No Ruling Today

New York - The federal judge overseeing the settlement between Google (NASD: GOOG) and authors over Google's plan to build a digital books index said the "voluminous materials" submitted by parties mean he will not make a ruling on Thursday, according to reports. "To end the suspense. I am not going to rule today. There is too much to digest," said U.S. District Judge Denny Chin.

Amazon.com Offers 100 MP3 Albums for $5 Each

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Tuesday launched a promotion where it will offer 100 albums for sale at its Amazon MP3 store for $5 each. The titles, hand-selected by editors, include current hits like Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster," as well as indie fare such as "The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines" and The Hold Steady's "Separation Sunday," and older classics like "Music From Big Pink" by The Band and "Hunky Dory" by David Bowie.

Amazon Signs Exclusive E-book Deal with Author Stephen Covey

Seattle - Online retail giant Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Tuesday announced that it has signed a deal with best-selling author Stephen R. Covey, giving the company the exclusive rights to sell e-book versions of two of his titles on Amazon.com.

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Thursday introduced a new feature, Disc+ On Demand, that lets consumers who purchase DVD or Blu-ray discs to instantly watch their purchases on a PC or TV (via TiVo) through the Amazon Video On Demand service. NewTeeVee noted that at launch, around 300 of Amazon's more than 330,000 DVD titles are eligible for the instant viewing feature, and that Amazon states that the instant viewing promotion is "valid for a limited time only."

WSJ, N.Y. Times Pan Barnes & Noble Nook E-book Reader

New York - Both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal on Thursday published reviews of bookseller Barnes & Noble's new Nook e-book reader device, and neither were particularly glowing, with David Pogue's headline in The Times reading, "Not Yet the Season for a Nook," while The Journal's Walt Mossberg noting the device "Has Potential, but Needs Work."

Smashwords to Distribute E-books on Amazon Kindle Store

Los Gatos, Calif. - Smashwords, a publisher and distributor of independently-published e-books, announced on Monday that it will supply its catalog to Amazon.com's (NASD: AMZN) Kindle Store. Smashwords says it will pay authors and publishers 42.5% of the digital list price set by the author for e-book sales through Amazon. The company, which distributes over 4,800 titles from 2,200 authors and 80 small publishers, also recently signed distribution deals with Barnes & Noble and Sony.

Brussels - The EU's Competition Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, on Wednesday announced a partnership between European royalty collection societies, major labels and online music retailers including Apple (NASD: AAPL) and Amazon (NASD: AMZN), to develop an EU-wide licensing scheme for music. Currently, rights for music and other copyrighted works must be negotiated separately for each individual country, with that particular country's collection society.

Seattle - Online retailer Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN), which last week introduced the second iteration of its own e-book reader device, the Kindle 2, has released a new application for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch that lets owners of those devices purchase and download the library of over 240,000 e-books available from Amazon.com. The "Kindle" application, available from Apple's online App Store, also features Amazon's "Whispersync" technology, which saves and synchronizes a customer's bookmark across Kindle, Kindle 2, iPhone and iPod touch devices.

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) may be set to introduce a new version of its Kindle e-book reader next month, Wired.com reported, citing a media event the company is hosting on Feb. 9 at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City. The first version of the device was released in late 2007, and Amazon has said the Kindle is one of the best-selling electronics devices it offers.
