Samsung, Panasonic Begin Selling 3D Televisions in U.S.

New York - Consumer electronics firms Samsung and Panasonic began selling their new 3D television models this week in the U.S., while Sony (NYSE: SNE) plans to enter the market in June. Samsung is offering a $3,000 bundle that includes a 46-inch television, 3D-compatible Blu-ray player and two pairs of 3D glasses, while Panasonic is selling a $2,900 bundle -- exclusively at Best Buy stores -- that includes a 50-inch plasma TV, 3D-compatible Blu-ray player and one pair of 3D glasses.

Since the attack on the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists, and some journalists, Google has said it is considering exiting China completely.

Samsung Debuts E-book Readers with Stylus Pen

Las Vegas - Korea's Samsung on Thursday debuted its first two e-book reader devices, the $399 E6, which features a six-inch screen, and the $699 E10, which sports a ten-inch screen. Both devices feature non-back-lit displays, which come with a built-in electromagnetic resonance stylus pen that can be used to write annotations or create to-do lists directly on the device's screen. The devices, set to ship in early 2010, will also feature Wi-Fi capability and Bluetooth, which allows sharing of certain content with other devices.

RealD Touts 3D TV Deals with Sony, Samsung, Others

Las Vegas - RealD, a developer of digital 3D technology, said on Thursday that it is working with Sony, JVC, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic and DirecTV to bring its stereoscopic RealD format to consumers' homes. The company will work with its partners to integrate 3D into HD televisions, and to develop both active and passive 3D glasses. RealD said that its format is compatible with the existing HD infrastructure, and can deliver 3D across cable, satellite, packaged media and the Internet.

RealD, Samsung Partner on 3D Televisions

Los Angeles - RealD, a provider of 3D digital cinema projection systems, announced on Monday that it has partnered with Korea's Samsung Electronics, and will integrate its 3D technology into Samsung's line of 3D televisions. The companies will also work jointly on "active eyewear technology and New Passive Display technology." RealD's systems have to date been installed on over 4,800 movie theater screens worldwide, and are currently being used to screen "Avatar" in 3D. "Avatar" became the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time over the weekend, when it reached a worldwide total of $1.02 billion.

Samsung Debuts E-book Reader Device in Korea

Seoul - Korean electronics firm Samsung has released a paperback-sized, $270 e-book reader device in its home country, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Samsung SNE-50K sports a five-inch touchscreen, but cannot connect to the Internet wirelessly to download e-books. The company partnered with local online store Kyobo to offer downloadable books via a PC connection. Samsung told The Journal that the company is working on versions of an e-book reader to sell in other countries, and is in talks with publishers and retailers.

Blockbuster OnDemand to Stream Movies to Samsung Devices

Dallas - Video rental giant Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI) announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with electronics maker Samsun to make its OnDemand service available on select Samsung HDTVs, home theater systems and Blu-ray players. Beginning in the fall, the services will offer online rentals from Blockbuster streamed directly to the devices, in addition to on-screen search and browsing, ratings, trailers and other information.

Samsung Debuts Mobile Video Download Store in Europe

Los Angeles - Korean electronics firm Samsung has launched a new mobile video store in Europe, that lets customers buy or rent movies and TV shows and download them to Samsung phones, CNET News.com reported. The service launched in the U.K. and Germany, with over 500 films from Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal and others. Movies cost about $3.55 for one-day rentals, and range in price from about $7 to $24 for purchase.

Netflix to Stream Instant Movies, TV to Samsung Blu-ray Players

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) announced on Thursday that it has partnered with Samsung to offer subscribers the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from its website to Samsung BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray disc players. The players will allow Netflix users to browse its catalog from their TV screens, read synopses and rate films, and fast-forward and rewind the video streams.

Samsung Withdraws $5.85 Billion Bid for SanDisk

Milpitas, Calif. - Korean electronics giant Samsung has withdrawn its $5.85 billion offer to acquire SanDisk (NASD: SNDK), the maker of memory cards and MP3 players. "After nearly six months of efforts to pursue a transaction with no meaningful progress, we are withdrawing our proposal to acquire SanDisk," Yoon Woo Lee, vice chairman and CEO at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement.
