President Obama plans to name Edith Ramirez as the new chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a White House official said Thursday. The news comes nearly two weeks after former chair Jon Leibowitz officially stepped down following four years at the helm. Ramirez, an FTC commissioner since April 2010, once was a colleague of Obama’s at the Harvard Law Review, and went on to become his director of Latino Outreach in California in 2008. Her appointment does not require Senate confirmation. The business practices of high-tech companies and the issue of online privacy have been major points of emphasis for the FTC in recent years.
