Sunnyvale, Calif. – Yahoo said on Tuesday it has acquired San Francisco-based streaming video startup OnTheAir. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
OnTheAir’s platform allows viewers of live streams to chat with the host in a talk-show format, putting it in the same general genre as Google+ Hangouts and the OoVoo-powered group chat on Facebook.
Users can schedule conversations whenever they wish and can opt to moderate the participants. Social tools enable sharing chats via Facebook and Twitter.
Investors include True Ventures and Triple Point Ventures along with individuals Scott Banister and Will Smith.
“While we haven’t yet attained our dream of building a widespread daily use product, we are just as committed to it. And this is why we’re so excited to be joining Yahoo,” wrote OnTheAir on its website. “When we first met with the team at Yahoo, it was clear that everybody there is committed to making mobile products the backbone for the world’s daily habits.”
