SoundCloud has gone live with a dramatically revamped version, previously available since May in private beta as Next SoundCloud. The service’s redesign was done with sharing, exploration, discovery and community in mind.
The new version resulted in 30 percent higher engagement than previously, according to SoundCloud. The company also reported that it now posts 10 hours of audio content every minute – including things like President Obama’s weekly address, comedy, sound effects, spoken poetry and other listenables in addition to music – and has 180 million users each month.
SoundCloud is now integrated with Facebook, so people who signup using that account can find their Facebook friends on SoundCloud and artists can utilize Facebook Connect to expand and communicate with their audience.
Another significant change is Continuous Play, which provides an uninterrupted audio stream of whatever files a listener chooses. Other features include the ability to create shareable playlists, shuffle playback, and real-time notification of comments and reposts. By the end of the week reposts, mobile search and other changes will be rolled out to mobile users.
Not everyone is happy with the changes, as is always the case with any alterations to any site. Comments pro and con the updated SoundCloud can be read on its blog.
“There’s no other platform out there that lets everyone get so close to such a diverse community of music and audio creators,” said Alexander Ljung, founder and CEO of SoundCloud. “From today, ‘Next’ is now simply SoundCloud. It’s a platform for people to discover new, original music and audio, for creators to build audiences, and for everyone to share what they hear whether online or on mobile.”
