French Court Says Google Violating Book Publishers' CopyrightsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on December 18, 2009 - 9:34am.
Paris
- A French court has found Google (NASD: GOOG) liable for copyright infringement, for
including works from French writers in its book-scanning project without prior
permission, Bloomberg reported. The ruling orders Google to immediately cease
scanning French works into its digital library project, and pay publisher
Editions du Seuil $430,000 in damages. Google has announced plans to appeal the
French court's decision."French readers now face the threat of losing access to a significant body of knowledge and falling behind the rest of Internet users," Philippe Colombet, director of development for Google Books in France, told Bloomberg. "Displaying a limited number of short extracts from books complies with copyright legislation both in France and the U.S. -- and improves access to books."
