Yahoo to Shutter GeoCities Free Web Page Hosting Service
/ April 23, 2009 2:25 pm

San Francisco – Yahoo (NASD:  YHOO) plans to shutter its GeoCities free personal Web page hosting service later this year, and as of Thursday was no longer accepting new customers, Reuters reported.

The company said it would provide users with details on how to save data from their sites later this summer.

Yahoo acquired GeoCities in 1999, in a deal valued at the time to be worth around $4.6 billion.

At the time, the service hosted more than 3.5 million Web pages — but such services became less popular with the advent of social networks and more user-friendly blogging platforms.
