It’s Official – Google Buys YouTube for $1.65 Billion

Authored by robert on October 9, 2006 - 9:55am.

Google announced today that it has agreed to acquire YouTube for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction.  Following the acquisition, YouTube will continue to operate independently while applying versus solutions from Google - e.g. search, textual ad serving, video ad serving, copyright technology, etc.

DMW Analysis:
Analysis: Is Google’s $1.65 Billion Offer Too Low for YouTube? -  UPDATED
Online Poll:
At $1.65 Billion, did YouTube sell too low?

My quick take-aways from the conference call:
What Google brings to the table:
Ad-serving technology
Search technology
Copyright technology (helping content owners find and manage their content)
Innovation & Smarts
Stock/Money/Power/etc.
What YouTube brings to the table:
Proven success in social networking space
Huge Audience
Ease-of-use and dedication to the user (like Google)
Huge inventory for serving video ads
Similar philosophy toward content owners & copyright
Bottom Line:
Together Google and YouTube want to help usher in the online video revolution and provide the most entertaining online experience - as Chad Hurely stated during the conference call - "users are now in control...they decide what rises to the top..."
