Buzzwatch: Jessica Simpson and Superdistribution

Authored by Jay Baage on July 24, 2006 - 12:08pm.

Jessica Simpson, her record company Sony BMG and her manager dad Joe Simpson have proven to be an unbeatable music business team. They seem to be doing everything right. From experimenting with releasing an open format MP3 format single on Yahoo! Music, selling personalized versions of the song “A Public Affair” to releasing the video version featuring Christina Applegate and Eva Langoria on Bony BMG Musixbox to be used freely on websites and in blogs. All of these initiatives rhimes well with the way young people consume media – it is 21st century marketing through what is known as “superdistribution”.

Superdistribution is a fancy word for spreading messages or products through networks, they can be either networks of friends or businesses. The idea is that an advertising message is more credible if it comes from someone you trust within your network. The idea is that making it easy for people to share Jessica Simpons new music and video will make the buzz spread like wildfire over the Internet and in one way or another translate into money for the artist and her reps (album sales, movie roles, sponsor deals etc.). Is it working? Oh yes. Jessica Simpson tops Yahoo!’s buzz list for Music and on Monday it was the number 6th on the most downloaded songs on iTunes.
